Watersports

The Tuckasegee River, with gentle I and II class rapids, is perfect for small children, and the rafting companies in Dillsboro specialize in family rafting trips. The Nantahala and Chattooga rivers offer world-class whitewater for older kids and adults.

Bear Lake, near Cullowhee, and Lake Glenville, near Cashiers, are large enough for water skiing and sailing. Boat rentals are available in Glenville.

Fishing

Fly fishermen love the wide, gentle Tuckasegee and Oconoluftee rivers, along with the many icy headwaters, tucked away in the mountains. Lake fishing for bass, walleye and crappie is also popular. Fishing guide services are available for both stream and lake fishing.

Hiking

With elevations ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 feet, Jackson County offers a delightful diversity of hiking trails.

Horseback Riding

Area stables offer gentle horses, well-maintained trails through beautiful scenery, and knowledgeable staff.

Cycling

The Nantahala National Forest offers single-track trails and back roads. The Nantahala Outdoor Center’s Tsali Trail System is one of the nation’s finest, while Panthertown Wilderness Area and the Roy Taylor ATV Area also offer riding opportunities.

Snow Skiing

Depending on weather conditions, skiing is available from December through February at the Sapphire Valley Ski Area (828-743-1163). Cataloochee Ski Area (800-768-0285) in nearby Maggie Valley is a popular and accessible ski destination.
